Install Canon EOS Utility Without CD or Old Version

Canon do not provide the original version of EOS Utility on their official website, and all the updates can only be installed given you have the old version. So often time, if we lost the CD, we got stocked. Either it’s we get a card reader or borrow a CD from other people.

I have encountered same problem and I found solutions for both mac and windows.

First of all, get the update for EOS Utility from the official site.

Then,

For MAC:

Then drag the app to desktop and show its contents. Navigate to Contents > Resources and remove the file “update.plist”. Now you can run this app as a normal installer.

For Windows:

We need to hack the registry by this

Since the updaters contain full versions of the software, it’s possible to convince the installer that the software is installed by adding appropriate heys to your windows registry

Open Notepad and write (or copy/paste into Notepad) the following (exactly):

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Utility]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\DPP]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\PhotoStitch
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Capture]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOSViewerUtility]

Note that you only need the entries for the software you want to install, but there’s no problem setting up everything.

Save as CanonUpdate (note .txt extension will be automatically added)

Rename the file CanonUpdate.txt as CanonUpdate.reg

Right-click on CanonUpdate.reg and select the Merge option

You’ll be prompted to see if you wish to add this info into the Registry. Answer ‘Yes’

You can now install any software update, without having the original installed.

  • Update for 6.3.1
  • To install ZoomBrowser 6.3.1, the registry key:
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX]
  • needs to be changed to:
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX\Install]

I’m told (thanks) that this has changed with Win7 x64, where the s/w currently runs in 32 bit mode, so the keys are:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOS Utility]
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\DPP]
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX]
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\PhotoStitch
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOS Capture]
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Canon\EOSViewerUtility]

    adding a new line via REGEDIT

    Did find the latest update for the Mac’s EOS Utility Update 2.9 doesn’t have the update.plist but found a previos version 2.72 did

    Then updated to the latest version (2.9) afterward which worked like a dream.

    Finally when will canon wake up and have all its drivers/software downloadable so we don’t have to work around their ‘must have cd policy”

    THANK YOU. And thanks to the person who said to Archive and then Unzip the Intaller.app. This fixed the permissions problem I had when I first downloaded the EOS240 file.

    Do what Jeensy said, download the old version, edit appropriately; then update as you see fit. I have done this before, but I guess they went to the newer version on Canon’s website.

    Hmmm…

    No joy here on MacOSX 10.6, either with v10.1 or 2.72. Both versions, after I remove the update.plist file the updater refuses to run – any ideas? Am I missing something?

    Really need to get this running!!

    For those people like me with win7 x64 that this trick don’t works, you can make the Key in regedit manually and everything is perfect :) Just follow the same directory structure.

    MAC OS X USERS!!! I found the solution about how to install the latest packages!

    1. Follow the given instructions
    2. When you have to remove the update.plist:
    -Right click on the “SDI.bundle”, select Resources
    -Navigate to content/resources
    -Remove the update.plist
    3. Install the utility normally :)

    This works fine with pack (It is for EOS 550D, so that’s why I had to install the later pack. I think this method works with the 2.10 update):

    Thanks, works perfectly.
    I have Capture One set up to start automatically when a camera is connected.
    At first the EOS utility started up but only offered me the “Monitor Folder” option (4th of the 4 options on start up).
    Quiting Capture One and restarting EOS Utility fixed the problem.

    I went on vacation and decided I wanted to take long exposure pictures of the stars. It’s stupid Canon makes you jump through these hoops to install software that only works on their cameras.

    Hello my Canon friends :P

    After updating my Mac to OS X Lion, the EOS Utility stopped working.
    I managed to get this work (by doing it with the 2.8.1 package).

    But I got problem, Canon EOS Utility worked few times then it completly stop working and it dont want even afte reinstalation. I got Win 7 64bit. Maybe there is a probleblem. Canon even dont list EOS Utilitis under W7 64bit softwares. :( (

    Hi, am very new to all this so please help…
    I have a EOS 450D, using Windows 7, and have no CD. I changed the registry as suggested and then successfully installed EOS Utility version 2.10.2.0. It seems to run fine.

    However, when I connect my camera, it still does not recognise the device and it appears I am missing the driver software. All my attempts to locate and install the required driver have failed.

    Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do?

    On MAC OS X, What you can also do is just rename the “update.plist” to any random name (e.g. update.t), so that it will be skipped during the installation.
    Canon IT policy, you are pointless.

    People having problems with the ‘merge’ section of this tutorial. Here’s a way I found worked for me.

    In your START MENU go to: run
    Then type: regedit
    press ENTER
    Once in regedit go to: file
    Select ‘Import’
    Choose your ‘CanonUpdate.reg’ file, wherever you saved it.
    Hit enter
    Done! It states your file has been merged into the registry

    “You can’t open the application DPP2.11.26_updater because it may be damaged or incomplete.”

    Many thanks this helped a lot.

    For those struggling with updating on Windows 7 64bit just enter the values manually. Run regedit and navigate to Wow6432Node. If there is no Canon branch then just Right click on Wow6432Node and then select New then Key now enter the value i.e.Canon.

    Now use the same technique to add the other values by right clicking on Canon and choosing New then Key.

    It seems like the mac solution doesn’t work anymore. There is no “update.plist” in the Resources folder or any other folder in the package.

    FYI – Mac users now need to delete the Info.datx file, not the info.plist file. Still hard to believe that canon doesn’t just provide the full installer for everyone…

    Not sure if this is a problem that can be fixed but..

    On vista, trying to copy/paste the text into a file it chooses in ‘system’ windows folder – it says I dont have permission to save in that folder, then offers to save it in documents instead.
    Also I think after trying few times accidently used ‘reg-edit’ to put the hkeys in the right folder (dont know how) but it wont let me save as- .reg and seems to want to save it as a text file with .reg as part of the filename (ie CanonUpdate.reg.txt as text file)
    I have a small understanding of windows and could use a ‘for dummies’ how-to instructions coz might be doing it wrong….

    Anyone able to help, please?

    First, thanks. Second, the registry codes above are slightly broken for Windows 7, both 32- and 64-bit, in both cases the closing bracket for PhotoStich is missing:

    Win 7 64-bit

    Windows 8.
    I have a windows 8 machine which has not got a DVD reader which has happily downloaded and installed several essential Canon programs, but will not install photostitch.

    After going through the online downloads for my camera I now have on the System Information the following on the Start Menu;
    -Canon Utilities
    -Camera window
    -Camera Window DC8
    -My Camera
    -Image Browser EX
    -Image Browser EX\Readme
    -Movie Uploader for YouTube.

    but no PhotoStitch.

    Any suggestions for a similar hack to the above for windows 8?
